Row of cured Live Oaks
Southern Live Oak
Quercus virginiana

Southern Live Oak is a broad spreading oak which provides deep shade. A mature tree will reach a height of 40 to 60 feet with a spread of 60 to 100 feet.

Our Live Oaks are grown from seed harvested at our nursery for their quality characteristics.  The trees are field grown in 18" and 24" Rootmaker bags in the Rio Grande Valley's fertile soil. Two to five inch caliper trees are available for sale.  For pictures of our Southern Live Oaks, click
here.

For the best specimen, plan to prune a newly planted Live Oak every year for the first three years and every five years thereafter.  Eliminate multiple trunks and branches which form narrow angles.

Sugarberry, Knockaway, Anacua
Anacua

A very small number of Anacua trees will be available in 2011.   They have been planted in 18" RootMaker bags.   Their root system tends to be shallow and sparse - so we have just planted a few to see how they do with our process.   We have always had at least one in our yard.  The birds love the berries.

Cedar Elm
Ulmas Crassifolia

The latest addition to our tree selection are the Cedar Elm.   Native to the Rio Grande Valley (and central Texas), this Elm is deciduous with small, dark green leaves.   It's habit is to be taller than it is wide;  expect a mature Cedar Elm to be 60 feet tall and 40 feet wide.   Cedar Elm tolerates poor drainage and clay soil;  additionally it is drought tolerant.   We expect to have some ready for the market by 2011.
